Roots in Color and Tradition
Karla Daniela Aragón Arreola is from San Antonio Arrazola, Oaxaca where color and imagination combine to bring alebrijes to life. She comes from a family of passionate artisans who have dedicated more than 30 years to this art.
A Family Legacy That Lives in Every Creation
I am the second generation in my family to create alebrijes, a legacy that began with my father and my uncle. Since I was a child, I grew up surrounded by the smell of freshly carved wood and the tools that shaped magical creatures. My mother and aunts, with their brushes and talent, painted each figure with vibrant details, specializing in bulls, cows, and giraffes. That love for our art has always been the heart of my family.
My First Strokes: An Encounter with Magic
From a very young age, I was drawn to colors and shapes. I remember how I would start painting on the copal shells left after carving a figure. Those first strokes were my way of exploring this world of fantasy that my parents and family shared with me. This is how I discovered my love for alebrijes and took my first steps on this beautiful path.
A Dream Ready to Take Flight: Sharing Our Story with the World
My greatest dream is to take our alebrijes to different corners of the world. I want my creations to cross borders and touch the hearts of those who see them, just as my father and uncle have done. I imagine my pieces traveling far, carrying with them the essence of San Antonio Arrazola. I also dream that my daughters will continue this family legacy, preserving the history and passion that connects us as a family.
