Zapotec Roots and Creative Spirit
Born in Juchitán de Zaragoza in 1996, Salma Orozco was raised deeply connected to her Zapotec heritage. From an early age, her creative spirit and curiosity for art led her to admire the traditions of her people, always fascinated by the colors, shapes, and beauty that represent the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
A Turn in the Road: From the Earthquake to Goldsmithing
In 2017, Salma completed her Nursing Degree at the Institute of Sciences and Higher Studies of Tamaulipas. With dreams of caring for others through health, her path seemed clear. However, a devastating earthquake struck her hometown that same year and changed everything. In the aftermath of the disaster, Salma’s priorities shifted. Faced with the need to rebuild everything that was lost, her passion and dreams realigned with her true calling.
Discovering Her Passion: The Art of Zapotec Filigree
The earthquake became a turning point that reconnected her with her culture and led her to a new way of helping, this time through art. Working alongside master artisans, Salma found goldsmithing a way to express the richness and beauty of her Zapotec heritage. Crafting filigree pieces using ancestral techniques and precious metals allowed her to reconnect with her roots and share the magic of her culture with the world.
A Dream Come True
In 2020, together with her family, Salma opened a space dedicated to creating and promoting select pieces of handcrafted Isthmian filigree jewelry. The name of the shop reflects her pride in her origins and her commitment to showcasing the talent of the Isthmus. Every piece of jewelry is a celebration of Zapotec identity, a blend of tradition, elegance, and culture embedded in every design.
A Clear Objective: Sharing Isthmian Talent with the World
For Salma, goldsmithing is more than just a craft; it’s her life’s mission. Each piece designed is a testament to the effort, love, and dedication she and the master artisans pour into their work. Her goal is clear: to bring the art and talent of the Isthmus to every corner of the world, showcasing the richness of Zapotec culture in every intricate detail.
