Juliana Marta Sernas

Roots and Traditions

Juliana Marta Sernas grew up in a small and picturesque village in Oaxaca, where embroidery is more than just a craft; it is a tradition passed down through generations. From a young age, she watched the women in her community, including her mother, gather every afternoon to embroider together. During these gatherings, Juliana learned the essential techniques of filling stitches and backstitching, fundamental to her village's embroidery tradition.

The Art of Shading

One of the most valuable lessons Juliana received from her mother was how to blend threads and intertwine colors to create realistic shading in her embroidery. This knowledge, passed down with patience and dedication, allowed Juliana to develop a unique style and a deep understanding of color and texture in her work.

Learning and Mastery

As Juliana grew older, her learning did not stop. Upon reaching adolescence, she followed the local tradition of being guided by master artisans specializing in San Antonino embroidery. It was then that Juliana mastered the seven techniques that make up this embroidery style, becoming an expert in her craft.

Preserving History

Juliana not only creates art; she also preserves a tradition that dates back to 1840. Each piece she embroiders reflects the legacy of past generations, a connection to her village's history, and a celebration of Oaxaca's rich cultural heritage.

Sharing Her Talent

Today, as part of Women's Magic Hands, Juliana Marta Sernas continues to share her art with the world. Through her creations, she carries the stories, traditions, and deep love for her native Oaxaca. Her embroideries are a living testimony to the perseverance, creativity, and pride that define the women of her community.
